Favoritas

I made it a point to get a lot of albums this year. These are my 5 favorite records from 2010... most of them are not from this year. I'm sure that since I'm so behind the times you probably already have all of these... but if you don't... get them! Also, I will let you know ahead of time that my reviews are very insightful.

RED HOUSE PAINTERS/ Rollercoaster [1993]
Got this album in September. It fit Fall really well, but in general I think this album captured the mood of my year. Dark, reflective, pretty.
Favorite track: "Mistress (Piano Version)"

ENLOU/ Body of Friends, Body of Water [2010]
I have many fond memories attached to hearing this batch of songs played live last year at Gratis Fest and then again at Midpoint. Then it finally came out this year - on cassette! So of course it's on the list.
Favorite track: "Ghost of Peace"

THE SMITHS/ The Smiths [1984]
Duh.
Favorite track: "Still Ill"

MY BLOODY VALENTINE/ Loveless [1991]
Reverb.
Favorite track: "Sometimes"

NEW ORDER/ Power, Corruption & Lies [1983]
Half of the songs on this album sucked, but the 4 that didn't suck were everything that I love about New Order.
Favorite track: "Leave Me Alone"

Other favorite songs:

Morrissey/ "Hairdresser On Fire"
The Cure/ "Plainsong"
The Sheds/ "Drunk for Lunch"
Sacred Spirits/ "Jackson"
L'albatros/ All of them

Sorry I don't know how to share mp3s for you to hear all of this wonderful music. Oh well.

Bring on the Dancing Horses

Trying not to go insane.

We've talked before about making records in different languages and I've decided it. If and when (it probably won't happen) we make another record, there will be an English and other language version. It just seems right, right? Why should everyone else in the world have to listen to English music?

Has

I have a purple bedroom. It has a Matthew Shelton lightbox in it. My best friend has meningitis. I don't have a Facebook now, or a life consequently, right? I have two Harry Potter books left. I don't have strong feelings for school, or work for that matter. I have too much stuff. I have been taking forever on this fall mix tape (let me know if you want one). I have been better, but then I have also been worse. I have just briefly synopsisized (new word) my life. I have nothing else to add.

Friday

First Movement

This song has remained one of my favorites since I heard it 4 years ago. So beautiful, honest, vulnerable, and eerie.

"She'll tell me her story of sorrow and suffering
She'll tell me it's so sad the way we've been acting
For we are surrounded by thousands of liars
That sing lovely songs in a river of fire
That flows from the hand of the Father"

MOOGster

If you're having trouble finding just the right birthday gift for me, and you're looking to drop $3,000... consider this:

Wednesday

Concrete Jungle

Even with all the hustle and bustle, I actually kinda liked New York City. I've never had any desire to go there before, but now I can certainly see myself going back someday.

+
Kids playing handball in Chinatown.
Subway riding / creepy-face-making.
Kris N. rapping Jay Z.
Disintegration.
Non-white people, and lots of them.
Frank's face when he tries to drink coffee.

Most of all it made me miss Seattle. NYC has nothing on Seattle.

Sunday

Tidbits

Leaving for our Wake Up Mordecai / Kris N. New York tour on Wednesday. That should be fun. Not really expecting much out of the shows, but looking forward to spending some quality time with Poptek friends. If nothing else, it's a few days out of Dayton.

Played a house show Friday night. Kris N. played a really good set - his songs are so wonderful to sing along to. It was also the debut of L'Albatros. I'm so thankful to Papa for these friends and the ability he gives us to create.

Then last night saw Sacred Spirits in Northside. Been listening to Josh's stuff for the past couple months, but hearing it in person was phenomenal. Really excited for what he's going to write and put out in the future.

Also, wrote a song a few weeks ago and did a quick little demo of it. I was listening to a lot of The Cure that week, so please be forgiving. Make-Believe

There's probably more to say. A lot has happened since the last time I posted, but whatevz. I don't remember much of it and you surely don't care.

Do with it what you will.

Booboo

Wrote this today. Please excuse the havoc a cold will reek upon my voice; hope you enjoy.

Thursday

Happy Spring Break Everyone

I sincerely hope yours has been better than mine.

Sunday

Les Tantrums (the song)

As many of you may or may not know, I've had a writer's block that's lasted from early 2009 until just recently. On Friday I had a song idea and didn't hesitate to run with it. Today I recorded it. My mic is out on loan right now, so the recording is a little rough... but I hope you can enjoy it and appreciate it anyway. Percussion was simulated by way of wooden stairs and a bicycle helmet.

Les Tantrums

Every Good Thing

All of my wool sweaters always seem to mysteriously turn into belly shirts. Somehow I think this not to be merely a coincidence.

Friday

Les Tantrums

This week brought me Tom Lauber, Realism, The Smiths, procrastination, weariness, and the line "I'd like to not like you".

Sunday

Out of My Mind

Apparently I still have a soft spot for cowboy songs. This one has been on repeat.

Friday

NYR#2

One of my New Year's Resolutions has been to be less lazy in my music listening. By this I mean making an actual effort to sit down and listen to music rather than just having it as background noise and listening to entire albums instead of only one or two songs that I like. I've also made a pact with myself to buy CDs rather than downloading off of iTunes. So far in the past couple of weeks I have purchased, in CD form, "Built My Fortress" by The Foxglove Hunt and "Face Your Fun" & "Pacifico" by The Lassie Foundation. Obviously, I have sporadically bought CDs in the past, but it's the straight and narrow from here on out. And since my iPod quit working last week, I will only be listening to mix tapes in the car.

I suppose it's time to try something different from what I've been doing.

As always, more resolutions when they come.

Tuesday

Things are looking up.

I would like to formally apologize for the plethora of emo posts. It was a bad month. I'll try not to let it happen again.

I had a dream a couple of nights ago where a friend and I were zooming over the ocean in giant swings that were connected to the clouds. It was slightly scary. Then last night I had a dream where I fell in love, it was very scary. I wonder what I'll dream tonight... I hope I dream up some motivation to work on pointless English class assignments.

Monday

Sometimes

Sometimes some things are just not possible. Examples include: time-travel, songwriting, being happy, health.

Sunday

I should try walking a mile in my own shoes

When I grow up, if I grow up, and if I live in the city I'd like to have a secret garden on the roof with trees and grass and waterfalls and tigers.

When I get married, if I get married, and if my wife wants to have one of those wedding things - this must be our first dance:

I want to have more dreams. I want to remember more of my dreams. Less time on the computer and more time in the magic cave, outside, in prayer, in silence, studying, learning. Less time pouting and more time being nice to my family, being nice to my friends, being nice to people I don't know that need it. Less time worrying and more time writing, having something to write about, chasing buffalo, listening to my beard grow, listening to the grass grow, petting Kronk & Wendy & Georgie, walking Roger. Less time conserving gas and more time out at the farm. Less time making small talk and more time making big talk. Less time liking you and more time loving you.

Some Days Are Better Than Others

Some days are lonelier than others.

My Spanish professor is Newman. I have a bad attitude. Sometimes I wish for things I know wouldn't be good for me right now but I wish I had them anyway. Actually my life isn't quite as morose as I make it sound. But I only seem to write pointless stuff on here when I feel this way.

I designed a postcard to send out to my friends it had a photograph of you and it said "Happy, The End".
